Santa Clarita Diet

What it's about
Santa Clarita Diet is about a normal Santa Clarita family of two married realtors, Sheila and Joel, and their daughter, Abby. However, something strange occurs, leaving Sheila with a dramatic change in mood and a new diet of human flesh.

Why it's enjoyable
Based off of the plot, this probably isn't what you would thing of when you think of a show that'll make you laugh. However, with the combination of their domestic issues like which neighbor could have stolen their garden hose with their serious issues of "who should we kill and how do we do it", Santa Clarita Diet is enjoyable and surprisingly lighthearted given the nature of the show.

Jane the Virgin

What it's about
Jane the Virgin follows the life of Jane Villanueva, who is determined not to repeat her mother's mistake of being a teen mother and decides to be a virgin until marriage. However, gets accidentally artificially inseminated and surprise - the sperm donor is her boss, Rafael. The show goes through Jane trying to handle the situation and goes through her relationships with her family: her mother, her abuela, and her boyfriend, Michael.

Why it's enjoyable
Jane the Virgin has a telenovela spin, with a snarky narrator always making jokes. While there are serious things in the show, the things that occur in the show are so ridiculously crazy and overdramatized (which the narrator notes) that you'll find yourself laughing.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

What it's about
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is about the life of Rebecca Bunch (aka the crazy ex-girlfriend) who is incredibly unhappy in her life in New York City as a lawyer at a high-profile firm and decides to move to West Covina, California, after running into her ex-boyfriend, Josh Chan, from summer camp.

Why it's enjoyable
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a musical romantic (the level of romance is debatable) comedy, so it's full of funny songs that express the characters' emotions. Here's one of the songs from the series that I like and think is pretty funny.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

What it's about
Kimmy Schmidt was formerly kidnapped and forced into a cult. However, when she is freed, she tries to rediscover the world and avoid her past by heading to the incredible New York city. The show follows her discoveries and her curiosities about this new world that she hasn't seen in 15 years.

Why it's enjoyable
One of the writers is Tina Fey, who also worked on creating Mean Girls, which is a pretty good indicator of the level of comedy coming from Kimmy Schmidt. Kimmy has an interesting and funny perspective on everything considering all her years of isolation that will surely make you laugh.

4 TV Shows to Watch When You Need to Laugh

  1. I just started Santa Clarita Diet strictly on the actors (any show with Nathan Fillion is a win in my book) and I am hooked! So funny for a zombie show -- and this is coming from a die-hard Walking Dead fan. I love how Netflix is bringing some great new shows to the world. Highly recommend A Series of Unfortunate Events for a good chuckle too, especially if you were a fan of the books and/or find grammar puns fun.

    1. It's definitely a great show! Netflix's originals span all kinds of genres, which I think is really neat because then there's something for everyone.
