I feel like my recent blog posts have been building off of each other and not just becoming something to share, but also something to teach myself. I recently talked about the need for productivity and how I've been pushing myself to be productive instead of living in the moment and taking some me-time. And because of that, I decided to take my own advice, even though it's difficult. So today I'm going to talk about something that I think is not only super necessary in my life, but also in anyone's life. And that's slowing down.

Life is fast paced. We're always thinking about when our next deadline is, when the next exam is, what we'll be doing next week, we're filling our lives quickly, with mundane activity or even incredible things. There are so many times when I'm thinking to myself, "Wow, where did the time go?" There's a reason why there's that saying, time flies, because it's true. And although it's practically impossible to stop thinking about the future entirely, I think that what we all need is to slow down. Life is short. We got that, so it's important to slow down and appreciate the little things. I understand that it's easy to get lost in big projects and being successful, don't get me wrong, I think that we all do that, but it's time to stop and smell the roses.

This might mean taking a moment to relax, read a good book, watch a movie, whatever it is to leave you refreshed and ready to dive back into the fast paced world. So what can we do to slow down? I like to believe that the moments where we take a breather are moments that we should enjoy on our own. Yes, I love being surrounded by amazing people, but I equally enjoy my own company. 

Tips for Slowing Down

Go out for a meal. Alone.

Scary, I know. However, I feel like the best way to slow down is to be alone. When I'm surrounded by friends, there's constant conversation and the time ends up passing within the blink of an eye. Go out to your favorite restaurant and enjoy your own company. Take the time to appreciate the food and indulge in your own thoughts. While this may sound boring to some people, I believe that this is a great way to be more refreshed. Stay off your phone and put your attention on yourself. Some of my best ideas come out of doing things alone.

Paint something.

I feel like in order to do this, I have to be in the mood for it, but whenever I paint, I always feel so relaxed. When I'm finished, it's the best feeling, not only pride in my work, but I'm also feeling refreshed while still feeling productive with my time. If you're the kind of person that really struggles with avoiding the un-productive feeling, this is the perfect thing to do to slow down. Put on some music and paint away, even if you're not the best at painting.

Pick a day to have no plans.

I like to plan a day that I want to have absolutely no plans on. I might end up Netflixing the whole day or I might end up doing a spontaneous activity, but the point of a plan-free day is to just go along with wherever the wind takes you. By that I mean that you can do things spontaneously. Some of the best moments can come out of spontaneity, not to mention that a plan-free day is a perfect stress-reliever.


I know, it's practically impossible, but shutting off your phone is a great way to live in the moment. Enjoy the world as it is instead of looking down at your phone screen. I think that we often get caught up in what's online, me included, that we sometimes forget what is right in front of us. Simplify your life and it will slow down naturally.
